I can eat out, too?!

Eating clean at home is fairly easy.  If it’s not in the house, it’s not on your plate…simple as that!  But what about the inevitable little celebrations that come up on your social calendar requiring that you dine out?  What to do?

Have you ever shown up to a restaurant ravenous and order everything on the menu?  Or you make an unwise decision based solely upon your craving?  How about stuffing your face with all of the free bread in the basket?

If you know the restaurant you’ll be dining at, making your decision before you arrive at the restaurant will save hundreds (maybe thousands) of calories.  Many restaurants post their menu online, and some with calorie counts.  You might be surprised to find that some salads have more calories than traditional entrees!

For instance, Olive Garden‘s Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad has 850 calories compared to 760 calories for Minestrone Soup (100 calories) and Cheese Ravioli with Marinara Sauce (660 calories)!

If they don’t have calorie counts posted, it’s a good idea to use common sense when choosing your meal.  Rosa Mexicano serves up a mean mexican meal that I absolutely love.  But they don’t post calorie counts (wonder why…)!  Can’t go wrong by ordering Guacamole (freshly made at the table) and Butterflied Red Snapper.  Yum!

Sometimes 2 appetizers are the way to go.  At Landmarc, I like the Lamb Meatballs with Warm Goatcheese Profiteroles.  Full of flavor, protein and veggies, plus the serving size is perfect!  AND I get to have some cheese, which I never keep at home, so it’s a treat for me!

You get the idea.  Keep your portions sensible, skip the bread (just tell your server ‘no’) and always, always order sauces, oils and dressings on the side.
