Wedding Tracker: Kaylin: Consistency?

Our sunny bride-to-be has been at it for just over two weeks! With a wedding only 8 1/2 months away and a goal of toning up her entire body, Kaylin’s fitted, strapless gown hangs in the nearby closet as a constant reminder that each month leading up to her big day matters. Big time.

February’s goal of consistency has had its ups and downs. I have been keeping tabs of Kaylin’s daily progress on, a wonderful resource to track workouts, calorie consumption and water intake. By entering in each morsel of food, Kaylin has exposed her bad habits and we’ve worked together to finesse those little ‘extras’. It helps that I act as a monkey on her back, reminding her to eat every 3-4 hours, get in more vegetables by eating a salad every day, and keep drinking at a 2-drink maximum to maintain self-control and willpower. After 2, all inhibitions go out the window.

It’s also that time of year when Girl Scout Cookies abound. Every office, neighbor, and best friend is pushing these tempting little sugar-bombs on us. It’s hard to resist a Samoa or Thin Mint. Sugar is uncool. It sends insulin levels sky-high: I have reminded Kaylin that if she must indulge, enjoy just 1 or two with an ounce or 2 of protein.

Kaylin has learned the value of planning out her week on Sunday. By looking at the forecast for weather, workload and her social calendar, she can map out her week accordingly:

  • Weather: Since the weather in SoCal is amazing, Kaylin has been enjoying at least one neighborhood run every week. In NYC, for instance, there is another snow storm on the way, so getting outside today is your best bet (45 degrees!). There’s an old farmer’s tale that says, “Make hay while the sun shines.”
  • Workload: Working late in the office can derail any workout regimen. Plan to get up early that day and do your workout first thing in the morning. Then you’re done for the day! My dad says, “The early bird gets the worm.”
  • Social calendar: Attending a best friend’s birthday bash? Going to Vegas for the weekend? If you know you your social calendar, you can plan ahead of time by getting workouts in and plan for healthy eating by looking at menus online.

Overall, Kaylin has been doing extremely well. She has lost 5lbs, bringing her weight from 155 to 150, has had more energy and feels like she has the tools to succeed. With just a few small tweaks in her diet (nix those cookies, keep alcohol consumption to a maximum of 4 per week and eat more veggies), our goal of consistency seems to be going pretty well!
