Fire on all cylinders

A new client of mine hired me, desperate to lose 10 pounds ASAP. Furthermore, she needed to know what the best diet program would be to get her there pronto: would it be Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, Weight Watchers or Blueprint Cleanse?

In our instant-gratification world, patience has been all but lost on us. We look for the cheapest, easiest and quickest route to results, many times throwing ourselves under the bus in the process!

As you might imagine, my answer to her all-too-common question was “none of the above.” Those 10 pounds didn’t appear overnight! You see, we are the sum of our habits. The only way to healthy, successful and permanent weight loss is by eating a balanced, whole and nutritious diet made up of natural, real food that our bodies were meant to eat. Obviously, exercise will help quicken the process, but it starts with what we’re putting in our mouths. Any diet that allows one to eat mac&cheese, brownies and other processed, pre-packaged foods is not a set-up for long-term success.

Consider the effects of fad dieting:

  • A low-fat diet is high in sugar. Sugar=more insulin secreted=fat storage=hormonal imbalance=metabolic disorders including diabetes.
  • By leaving important dietary decision-making to someone else, how will you learn to make healthy choices?
  • Weight fluctuations are frustrating and can lead to low self-esteem…which leads right down Depression Road.
  • An unhealthy relationship with food causes eating disorders. Hello bulimia, anorexia and obesity!
Let’s face it: eating is one of the greatest pleasures on earth. Nothing beats the juicy crunch of an apple, the succulence of an egg yolk dripping off the chin, or a freshly chopped salad. Our bodies are machines. Make yours well-oiled.
