Most New Yorkers have abbreviated kitchens. It seems like architects all but forgot about them and, at the last minute, quickly installed a counter, 2-burner stove, half a fridge and called it thus. Could this could be why New Yorkers LOVE their takeout?

We lucked out: ours is well-equipped and we take full advantage of it on a daily basis. I stock my kitchen based on easy, healthy, go-to meals. This way, there is no negotiating with my irrational, hungry cravings. The thing is, if I’ve got junk-food lurking around, you can BET it’s calling my name and tempting me. So I just don’t buy it.

So here’s a handy-dandy little meal-based cheat-sheet of my weekly groceries. It’s pretty straight-forward but suits our needs perfectly. I hope it inspires your grocery list, too!


  • eggs, nonstick spray
  • Ezekiel bread (for toasting)
  • nut butters (peanut, almond, cashew)
  • oats (with toppings like crumbled walnuts, berries)
  • yogurt

Smoothie ingredients

  • bananas
  • milk (almond, low-fat cow’s or rice milk)
  • protein powder (whey, rice, hemp)
  • frozen fruit (acai, berries, peaches)
  • cinnamon
  • omega’s (chia seeds, ground flax)

Salad fixins

  • greens
  • added vegetables (carrots, broccoli, radishes, etc)
  • seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, ground flax)
  • proteins (grilled chicken, tuna, lamb kebabs)
  • dressing (lemons, olive oil, balsamic, sea salt, spices)


  • snack mixes (trail mix, mixed nuts, raw nuts)
  • hummus with brown rice cakes or sliced raw vegetables (celery, carrots, bell pepper)
  • hard-boiled eggs & a piece of fruit (apple, orange, pear)
  • hard cheese with wasa crackers

Dinner options

  • marinated meats (yogurt-dill lamb kebabs, adobo chicken, garlic-lemon fish) (don’t forget to buy marinate ingredients)
  • whole grains & root-vegetable starches (brown rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots)
  • steam-ready vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, kale, bok choy)

Dessert options

  • individually-wrapped, high-quality dark chocolate
  • applesauce
  • fresh berries & honey


  • sparkling water
  • brita filter
  • lemons
  • tea
  • coffee
  • high-quality red wine (for cooking AND drinking!)
