Finding Greener Grass

Nov 26

I’ve had a 10-year romance with NYC’s “sexiest gym.” When the city’s lights went out or my building’s hot water turned off, I fled into the trusty arms of Equinox for comfort. But lately, I’ve had less-than-sizzling feelings for the “hottest gym.” Perhaps it’s because my years-old routine has become, well, routine. Or, maybe I’m just tired of paying nearly $200/month. Whatever the case, I broke off my decade-old fling. I’ve had enough.

Set in motion by the Spartan Race in September, I decided to try something fresh and new. Taking time off of the same ol’ has given me fresh ideas and motivation: I’ve embarked upon a citywide quest to find my physical fitness match. I’m seeking a place that will equally inspire AND motivate me.

It feels like I’m back in the dating world: first, I seek “my type” of gym online. Then, if I like what I see from photos, I arrange for an in-person meet-up. Afterwards, they always call or email with a second-date offer (every time!). What’s more, there are some real contenders in NYC. For example, this Crossfit-hater found a “box” that I could actually hang out with for awhile. Boot camps taught by ex-marines? Yes please! A place where I can swing from the rafters and perfect my aerial skills? Sign me up…one gym-date at a time!
